The Intern

Who is she?

She is an enigma. Someone who is a jack of all trades, master of none.

Ha. I'm kidding. Sort of. I wasn't kidding about the master of none part.

Hi.

My name's Gina. I am a recent graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology and an alumnae of Alpha Xi Delta. I majored in biology, and with my biology electives I chose classes that would set me up for a future in zoology. I took Animal Behavior, Zoology Internship (which is referenced often in this blog), Adventures in Ornithology, Marine Biology, and Tropical Ecology, among many other courses. I had a minor in Deaf Cultural Studies.

During my time at RIT, I was also a resident advisor, a student researcher (for many projects) and later a teaching assistant in the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences, a co-researcher for an innovation grant to set up increased in-class writing at National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) for the semester conversion, a production manager for "Dog Sees God," secretary and treasurer for WOLK Deaf Jewish Cultural Club, and secretary/EVR Chair for the RIT/Gallaudet Sports Weekend (better known as "Brickfest").

I am a current applicant for the Fulbright Fellowship, and while I take my gap year between RIT and graduate school (wherever that might be), I plan on working as often as possible with animals. I am bringing up my horse, Ringo, to New York in August and will be volunteering at the RIT Bird Observatory during migration seasons as a trainee bander.

After my gap year, I hope to attend graduate school at either Canisius College (studying Anthrozoology), the University of Maine at Orono (studying zoology with a concentration on migratory birds), and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (studying organismal and evolutionary biology) among others.

What does life hold for me? I have no idea.

Am I excited?

Yes.

Bonus facts
I am insanely obsessed about hockey. My first taste of hockey was a Carolina Hurricanes game when they played out of Greensboro. After that, I watched international hockey at the Deaf Olympics in 2007 (USA won gold, naturally). I became hooked after that and have been to every single RIT homecoming hockey game at the Blue Cross Arena. I actually stayed up all night to get tickets, and then did it two nights in a row to go to Detroit to watch RIT in the NCAA Frozen Four in 2010. I was there when the Lady Tigers attempted, and lost, the national championship in 2011, and then won it in 2012.

I have accurately predicted the Stanley Cup final matchup for the past three years.

I love lacrosse. I was disappointed I couldn't be in Philadelphia this year to cheer on our boys in the NCAA DIII final against Stevenson University. We lost, unfortunately, but had a stellar season (19-3!). I'm a proud alum.

I'm bilingual. I'm fluent in American Sign Language and written English. I know the Greek alphabet in Greek sign language (ask me sometimes!). I'm working on teaching myself Italian.

I am insane about my horse. I will babytalk to him and refer to him as my boy, which can be confusing because I call my boyfriend "my boy" as well!
